Richard Gleave

The Years 1919 to 1967

After the war he returned to work at the Clayton Aniline.

He moved to 73 Osborne Road, Levenshulme and was living there when he married Lily Platt on the 5th of February 1925 at St Cross Church, Clayton.

Lily Platt was born in Penistone on the 15th July 1901 the family moved to 45 Glenolden Street, Clayton, then moved to Stanton Street, Clayton in 1912, before eventually moving to 32 Powell Street, Clayton. She attended Seymour Road School, Clayton.

When Richard and Lily were first married they lived at 26 Cuthbert Avenue, Levenshulme, next-door at 24 lived his mother Edith and two of his sisters. Edith by this time had separated from her husband Albert

Richard and Lily had two children, Irene (my mother) born on the 22nd September 1927 and Eric born 14th August 1931, they were both born at Powell Street, Clayton, their Grandma Platt’s house.

Some time in 1931 they moved to No 4 Lostock Avenue, Levenshulme. My mother can’t remember the date; she was only 4 when they moved but says it was just before she started school round the corner at Chaple Street, Primary.

7th April 1935 Richards father Albert Edward Gleave died in Manchester Royal Infirmary aged 72.

They lived at 4 Lostock Avenue untill June the 6th 1944 ‘D Day’ (my mother says she can remember that date) when they moved to 162 Broom Lane, Levenshulme, where they bought an Off Licence Shop at the corner of Chaple Street.

They both ran the shop with the help of my mother while he carried on working as a shipping clerk at Clayton Aniline.

He retired from Clayton Aniline around the age of 55 this was in the early 1950’s after suffering from heart trouble and in December 1957 was made a life member of the South Manchester Parks Amateur Bowling Association.

Nana and Grandad enjoying a holiday in Newquay August 1953.

They continued to run the off licence until 1962; when they retired from the shop after Nana had a stroke, they bought a house at 88 Florist Street, Edgeley, Stockport.

They celebrated their ruby wedding anniversary with a party at Florist Street in February 1965.

Nana sadly died in 1966 and Grandad passed away the following year on the 21st July 1967 in Stepping Hill Hospital, Stockport, their ashes are buried along with their Son Eric and his wife Amy in Fleetwood Cemetery.
